You\u2019re not alone. Almost half\u00a0(44%) of small business management\u00a0don\u2019t see cyber crime as a priority either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But with\u00a042% of small businesses experiencing at least one attack\u00a0in the past 12 months, that thinking needs to be turned around. Phishing, malware, zero-day attacks, application vulnerabilities, and good old-fashioned\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zb1r_uKOew4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automated hacking<\/a>\u00a0all represent the modern-day threat to the SMB.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Why is the small business such a strong focus for cyber criminal activity?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Sometimes you\u2019re the target<\/strong><br \/>\nLet\u2019s start by evaluating the target options a cyber criminal has and see what the \u201ccriminal ROI\u201d is on attacking each target:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Individuals<br \/>\nEveryday people represent the least secure target for a cyber criminal. They may or may not have some form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarwindsmsp.com\/products\/remote-management\/managed-antivirus\">Antivirus<\/a>\/malware in place, but they are susceptible to phishing attacks and the like to be fooled into giving up credentials to banks, paypal, etc. However, individuals also have the smallest access to cash and credit. A recent article stated the\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.statisticbrain.com\/american-family-financial-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">average savings account balance in the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0was a little under $4,000. While the specific amount isn\u2019t important, it represents that there isn\u2019t a lot a cyber criminal will be able to run off with.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Small Businesses<br \/>\nLike individuals, small businesses are focused on operations and not security.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Access to the Internet, email, utilizing inexpensive cloud-based applications\u2014all in the name of keeping the business running with as little expense as is possible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And one of those areas you don\u2019t spend on is security. The small business has more access to cash and credit than an individual, but it\u2019s still a far cry from the amount one would expect an enterprise company to have.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Enterprises<br \/>\nThese businesses have seemingly endless access to cash and credit. They also have dedicated budget and headcount focused on securing their networks, systems, data, and users, making it very tough to make any attack headway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">So which target makes the most sense?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Think like a Small Cyber crime Business<\/strong><br \/>\nSince you already run one small business, let\u2019s pretend we\u2019re going to start a new business\u2014one that works to deceive customers into giving us money using scams and hacks to get the job done. Like any business, you want the greatest margin possible, which means the lowest investment and the highest return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So which of the three targets requires the least investment of our time (read: the lowest security), and provides us with the greatest return (read: the most access to cash and credit)?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">BINGO! It\u2019s the small business!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You have the least amount of security, a largely wide-open Internet connection susceptible to automated attacks that hit thousands of IP addresses including yours (making you a target of convenience rather than one of espionage), many points of entry (your employees), and the most access to money in various forms, relative to your security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But believe it or not, sometimes when a small business is hit, they\u2019re not the target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Sometimes you\u2019re just an asset<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the world of spying, an asset is someone being used for information or access to an even more important target. And in the world of cyber crime, an enterprise, having a security budget larger than the entire operating budget of most small businesses, is too tough to gain access to. So why not access the Enterprise through a less secure partner? By doing so, you unknowingly become an asset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The infamous Target breach of 2013 wasn\u2019t accomplished by directly attacking Target\u2019s infrastructure, databases, or security. It was initially accomplished by obtaining credentials from a Target vendor who handles their HVAC. In addition, other compromised computer systems through the U.S. were utilized as \u201cdrop\u201d locations for the stolen credit card data where it could be accessed later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>See? Asset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Either way, you\u2019re a target<\/strong><br \/>\nSo we\u2019ve answered the question of \u201cwhy\u201d, so the next question is \u201chow\u201d is it being accomplished and \u201cwhat\u201d to do about it.\u00a0 Let me attempt to do both in one simple list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Think like a Chief Security Officer<br \/>\nScrutinize every way employees expose themselves to external influences\u2014email, websites, cloud applications, etc.\u2014and look for the ways credentials and computers can be compromised.\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/Recent-Activity-Phishing-Attacks-on-PayPal-Due-to-eBay-Hack-443369.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phishing attacks<\/a>\u00a0and malware via email, as well as\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2610582\/web-browsers\/internet-explorer--snowman--zero-day-spreading--use-alternative-or-patch-with-kb-293408.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advanced attacks via website access<\/a>\u00a0are two major ways criminals get in.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Protect Yourself<br \/>\nImplement the basics from the start: anti-malware, antivirus, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarwindsmsp.com\/products\/remote-management\/web-protection\">web filtering<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Partner Up<br \/>\nUtilize a solid partner who has dealt with this before. Remember, they do this every day and have been exposed to MUCH more of this than you have.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Prepare Yourself<br \/>\nStatistically speaking, it\u2019s going to happen sometime. Maybe not today, but within the next two years, you may find yourself a statistic. Build at least a rudimentary plan around what actions should be taken to remedy the security breach itself, and then what to do to remedy any reputation or revenue losses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don\u2019t think a cyber criminal will be interested in your business, think again!
