As we all know, it\u2019s Cybersecurity Awareness Month and this week, specifically, is Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week. While it\u2019s no secret this is a hot space for businesses, it\u2019s also an incredibly hot market for talented people who can help develop security best practices to keep companies and their customers safe.<\/p>\n

At N‑able, we\u2019ve appointed Dave MacKinnon as our chief security officer<\/span><\/a>, focused on building a world-class information security team for areas including product and application security, governance, risk and compliance, and security incident response.<\/p>\n

\"\"We asked Dave what\u2019s so exciting about being a part of the N‑able security team and he replied, \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m humbled to have had the opportunity to join the team at N‑able when I did.\u00a0This team has already built a solid security foundation, and we\u2019re focused on continuing to build upon that.\u00a0Our goal is to ensure we are protecting ourselves, our partners, and their customers, as we all work together to combat today\u2019s threats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Dave\u2019s leadership, we\u2019ve been keeping security at the center of all we do\u2014which means there are tons of exciting opportunities as the team continues to expand.<\/p>\n

So what are those opportunities? We sat down with one of our amazing hiring managers, Kal Mavuleti (pictured, left), senior manager of operations engineering in Austin, to learn more about our growing security team and some of the roles he has open today.<\/p>\n

Q: Everywhere we look, it seems security is making headlines around the world. Why is working in security so hot right now? <\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> Security has seen an increased focus in the recent years as the threat landscape and threat actors have increased with more sophisticated attacks taking place. Security is everyone\u2019s business, and more so with R&D teams that have to build secure products. Anyone that has a security mindset\u2014and is willing to build the skills to master Secure Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)\u2014will have a huge impact on any software organization.<\/p>\n

Q: What specifically makes these open security roles on your team so exciting? <\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> These roles for security in R&D will be focused on overall secure SDLC practices, starting with security during the design phase with threat modeling and continuing through secure coding and testing practices. The roles will also be focused on a secure build pipeline\u2014implementing policy as code with SCA, SAST, and DAST scanning and building infrastructure as code. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals looking to learn and grow and build a security mindset\u2014and help R&D teams with security best practices.<\/p>\n

Q: What do you look for in a new member for your team?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> Skills-wise, we are looking for engineers, DevOps, and security professionals that have a security mindset and are willing to learn and grow into the role.<\/p>\n

Additionally, I look for three main characteristics: hungry, humble, and smart. It\u2019s important to be hungry with the drive to continuously learn and grow, humble to work across various teams and collaborate with them, and smart with the ability to learn new tools and processes and keep up with the security threat landscape.<\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s one interesting thing about working in security that you wish more people knew about? <\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> At its core, security is all about layering and depth. The more layers we add to protect our assets and products, the harder it is for the threats to exploit the assets.<\/p>\n

Q: What do our company values (N-rich lives, N-spire others, and N-joy the journey) mean to you?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> We N-rich our customers\u2019 lives by building great products that are secure. We N-spire our team members to do great things because we believe in them. And we N-joy the journey because it is the journey and not the destination that matters the most.<\/p>\n

Q: Anything else you want to share with our readers? <\/b><\/h2>\n

Kal:<\/b> N‑able truly is a great workplace. Especially since we spun-off as an independent, publicly-traded company earlier this year, we are on a new journey to define what is great and build it with our own ideas.<\/p>\n
