Specifically, when do you decide to leave a process alone, since you\u2019ll spend more time automating it than you will ever gain back after it\u2019s automated?<\/p>\n<p>While thinking about this dilemma, I stumbled on this webcomic, which I hope you enjoy as much as I did:\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/1205\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/xkcd.com\/1205\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, it\u2019s a flawed approach to think of it only from a time savings perspective. From talking with other MSPs, it seems others agree. Several have told me if they\u2019re doing something more than twice, they believe it\u2019s worth investing at least some time to see if they can automate it. From the recent peer user groups, here are the primary reasons why people believe something may be worth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarwindsmsp.com\/products\/rmm\/automated-maintenance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automating<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If it will save more time in a month, quarter, or year than it will take to automate<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s prone to user error\u2014for example if there\u2019s a 10-step process involving user typing and user error will cause more work<\/li>\n<li>If it will give the end customer a better user experience<\/li>\n<li>If there\u2019s strategic value to automating it (i.e. the customer demands it)<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s boring, repetitive work<\/li>\n<li>If trying to automate everything is a strategic decision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your decision to automate will depend on your needs, capacity to build it, and your customers\u2019 requirements. That said, I don\u2019t advocate automating everything because it\u2019s not possible. However, it\u2019s worth looking into automating as much of your daily and recurring processes as possible to make your life easier.<\/p>\n<p>One mistake people often make is to create everything from scratch at each request. If you want to automate something, I highly recommend checking in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarwindsmsp.com\/cookbook?promo=blog\">automation cookbook<\/a>\u00a0first to see if it\u2019s been built already.
