Patching once a month at 2 a.m. is not a strategy, it is a liability.

Every IT team has a patch queue that never really ends. You clear it on Friday, and by Monday it has filled up again, with critical updates competing for attention alongside the day-to-day work of keeping the business running. For years, the honest coping strategy has been triage: patch the scary ones, batch the rest, and quietly hope the gap between “disclosed” and “exploited” stays wide enough for them to catch up.

I have been patching Windows boxes since NT. I have made every one of those calls, and I have watched much of the industry build its patching methodology around a single assumption: that we have time. Test slowly, deploy at night, reboot eventually, and prioritize the customer’s fear of downtime above almost everything else.

That assumption just died. And if you run endpoints for a living, the way many of us were taught to patch can now put our clients at risk.

Let’s talk about how we actually patch

Here is where I get to be the guy who has seen this movie too many times. With most IT teams, you find the same well-intentioned habits, every one of them built for a world that no longer exists.

We patch at night when the machines are off. It feels responsible. It is also why patches quietly never land. You scheduled the job for 2 a.m., the laptop was in a bag on the back seat of a car, and the deployment failed silently. Multiply that across a fleet, and you have a patch report that says “sent” and an estate that is still exposed. If your patching depends on devices being awake at a time when they mostly are not, you do not have a patch process, you have a wish.

We install, but we do not reboot. A patch that has been downloaded and staged is not protecting anyone. On Windows especially, many fixes do not take full effect until the reboot is completed. I see fleets running for two and three weeks with pending reboots because nobody wanted to be the one to interrupt a user. That is not caution. That is a window you are holding open on purpose.

We let fear of production make the call. Every one of us has had a client who will not accept downtime. I understand it, I have lived it, and I am telling you the risk math has flipped. The great risk is no longer the ten-minute reboot. The greater risk may not be the unpatched, internet-facing box that gets exploited the same day a fix ships. When you cave to “not now,” you are not avoiding risk. You are choosing which risk you take, and you may be choosing the greater one.

We patch once a month and call it a cadence. Monthly patching made sense when attackers needed months. They may now only need hours. A 30-day cycle means that for up to 29 of those days you are knowingly carrying known, fixable holes. Patch Tuesday is the vendor’s release rhythm. It was never meant to be your response time.

None of this is because admins are lazy. It is because the methodology fits the threat model we grew up with, and the threat model changed underneath us. So let me show you how much it has changed, because this is where opinion ends and the data takes over.

The clock did not just shrink. It went negative.

For most of the last decade, defenders had breathing room between a patch’s release and the first observed exploitation of the vulnerabilities is addressed. Google’s Threat Intelligence Group has measured that window, the “time to exploit,” for years. In 2018 it averaged 63 days. In 2024 it hit negative one day, and their 2025 estimate is around negative seven, meaning exploitation is now routinely happening before a patch is even public (Google Threat Intelligence Group / Mandiant M-Trends). In the same body of work, Google tracked 90 zero-day vulnerabilities disclosed in 2025 and exposed in the wild. The breathing room is gone. In a growing number of cases, it has inverted.

AI could compress that window even further. In a July 2026 “Eye on the Market” note titled Patchmageddon, J.P. Morgan’s Michael Cembalest examines how frontier AI models are changing the math on both sides of the fight. The same models that can scan a codebase and surface unknown vulnerabilities at scale can also take a freshly released patch, reverse engineer the flaw it fixes, and produce a working exploit in minutes rather than months (Cembalest, J.P. Morgan). Writing an exploit from a known patch was always a fairly mechanical process. Now, with AI, it is automated, fast, and cheap.

Now hold that next to the habits above, and here is the number that should end the argument: in a Ponemon Institute study commissioned by ServiceNow, 60% of respondents whose organizations had experienced a breach said it involved a known vulnerability for which a patch was already available but had not been applied (Ponemon Institute / ServiceNow). Not a zero-day nobody saw coming. A fix that existed, sitting undeployed, on a device that was offline at 2 a.m., or waiting on a reboot, or skipped because the client did not want the disruption.

We are not losing to genius attackers. We are losing to our own patch backlog.

The flood is bigger than your own code

There is a structural reason the patch volume keeps rising. The software you defend often includes components written and maintained outside the vendor whose name is on it. Black Duck’s 2025 Open Source Security and Risk Analysis report, which audited nearly a thousand commercial codebases, found that 97% contained open source components and 86% contained known open source vulnerabilities. Ninety percent had components more than four years out of date, and the average number of open source files in an application has tripled since 2020 (Black Duck OSSRA 2025).

Modern software is assembled far more than it is authored, much of it on libraries maintained by a small team of volunteers. If AI-assisted discovery starts surfacing flaws in those libraries faster than anyone can fix them, the resulting remediation pressure lands on the people managing the endpoints where that software runs. That is you. The queue is not going to get shorter. It is going to get bigger and faster at the same time.

The reframe: patch fast, and prove it

So here is the mindset shift I am asking you to make. The goal is no longer just to patch. It is to patch quickly, across every operating system you manage, and with certainty that it actually happened at every endpoint, all without babysitting it by hand. Speed and confidence need to work together. Three things must be true at once:

You see everything. A current, comprehensive inventory of every device and what is running on it. You cannot reliably patch devices or software you do not know about.

You act at machine speed too. Automated approval, scheduling, and deployment, so the move from “a patch exists” to “the patch is applied” follows defined policies rather than waiting for someone to reach the queue on Tuesday.

You can prove it. Reporting that confirms, per device, which patches were successfully applied, which failed, and what still needs attention, so the “I thought that was deployed” surprise never happens again.

Where N-central fits

This is the problem N-central is built to help solve, and its capabilities now extend beyond patch deployment alone. N-able just shipped AI-Accelerated Vulnerability and Patch Management: a closed-loop workflow that brings detection, prioritization, remediation, and verification together in one place, with patching as the first native remediation action instead of a separate chore in a separate tool. The goal is to reduce the mean time to remediate (MTTR), helping teams to respond faster and minimize exposure before a threat becomes an incident.

Look at how directly these capabilities address the habits I called out earlier:

One engine across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Third-party application patching now runs through a single unified engine spanning all three operating systems, with more than 550 managed applications at launch. Your mixed estate stops being a patchwork of half-covered point tools.

AI-guided prioritization, inline. The N-zo Patch Expert works alongside the Vulnerability Expert to prioritize vulnerabilities using signals like CVSS, KEV, EPSS, and device context, so your team focuses its expertise on fixes that reduce exposure rather than triaging a flat list.

Proof on one screen. The Security Insights Dashboard consolidates exposure, exploitable CVEs, patch success, deployment lag, and reboot status, and every widget is actionable. That is the “I thought it deployed” gap closed and reboot drift finally made visible.

Rules over sprawl. N-central is a rule-based system, and that approach helps your team manage patching through consistent rules rather than overlapping settings. Patch Policies land the first wave of this approach (generally available on Linux, early access on macOS, Windows to follow), and the rule-based control model will extend across the patch engine over time.

I will be straight about what technology does and does not solve, because overselling its capabilities helps no one. A platform does not remove the need for good judgment about maintenance windows and critical systems. What it removes is the manual work that turns a one-day response window into a two-week deployment. When the response must be measured in hours, the teams that win are the ones that have automated the mechanical parts using clear rules and freeing their people to make sound judgment calls.

What to do this quarter

You do not need to boil the ocean. You need to shorten the time between disclosure and “done, verified, everywhere.”

Get to a real inventory. If you cannot list every managed endpoint and its patch level right now, that is job one.

Automate the routine, gate the risky. Let low-risk patches flow automatically on defined rules; reserve human review for higher-risk changes and systems where downtime has significant consequences.

Measure your own mean time to remediate (MTTR). Track the time a critical patch actually takes to reach 100% of endpoints. If you do not measure it, you cannot shrink it.

Enforce the reboot. An installed patch that never rebooted is not done. Treat pending-reboot drift as an open vulnerability because it is one.

Stop trusting “it deployed.” Require verification reporting. A patch is finished when its successful installation, and any required reboot, is verified, not merely when the job reports that it was sent.

Have a plan for what you cannot patch. Legacy and end-of-life systems will not always have a fix. Segment them, monitor them, and shrink their exposure.

For a long time, we graded ourselves on being careful. From here forward, the number that matters is how fast you can remediate vulnerabilities and verify that it stays closed. The tsunami is already breaking. You can keep relying on a monthly maintenance window and a wish, or you can change the approach and actually hold the line. I know which admin I want to be.

Sources

Google Threat Intelligence Group / Mandiant, M-Trends 2026 (time-to-exploit trend, zero-day counts): M-Trends 2026, Google Cloud

Michael Cembalest, Eye on the Market: Patchmageddon, J.P.
