{"id":39807,"date":"2022-11-17T17:36:31","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T17:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/?p=39807"},"modified":"2024-03-04T14:44:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T14:44:54","slug":"how-to-stop-windows-11-update-in-the-registry-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/it\/blog\/how-to-stop-windows-11-update-in-the-registry-and-more","title":{"rendered":"How to stop Windows 11 update in the Registry and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">When I initially wrote my guide to blocking Microsoft\u2019s auto-update to Windows 11\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/blog\/windows-11-how-to-configure-an-auto-patch-decline-in-n-central\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Windows 11: how to configure an auto-patch decline in N&#8209;central<\/span><\/a>\u2014I only had N&#8209;central partners and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/products\/n-central-rmm\/patch-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">N&#8209;central Patch Management<\/span><\/a> in mind. However, after reading various other forums and discussions, I thought I\u2019d take a more regimented approach to stopping or blocking Windows 11 from your machine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In this new post I\u2019ll show you the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/products\/n-central-rmm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">N&#8209;able N&#8209;central<\/span><\/a> method and how to do it in the Registry using Powershell. So, whether you\u2019re or not you\u2019re using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/resources\/patch-management-a-feature-available-with-n-able-n-central\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">N&#8209;central RMM patching capabilites<\/span><\/a> you\u2019ll still be able to block Windows 11 until you\u2019re good and ready for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Prevent Windows 11 update<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">First, let me address one of the screenshots in my previous blog because I have had many questions on it over the past year. In this screenshot, I am asking you to select all Microsoft Windows Operating systems and not just Windows 10. But why? It\u2019s quite intentional.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re wondering why I recommend selecting <b>ALL <\/b>Microsoft Operating systems, even those that have zero chance of ever upgrading to Windows 11, and not just the below listed versions, the answer is quite simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Oftentimes we have to break out another variant of Windows 10 into our patch management system (there are some technical reasons for this), and if we just selected the Windows 10 variants, it would not propagate to the additional entries and the Windows 11 update might still sneak through. So, an easy (and harmless) way to avoid this is to decline this patch across all Microsoft operating systems!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Here is what I recommend doing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1061\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53.png 1061w, https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53-1024x428.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53-768x321.png 768w, https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-22-at-09.02.53-700x292.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1061px) 100vw, 1061px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">How to block Windows 11 update in the Registry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">If you don\u2019t have N&#8209;central Patch Management you can follow these instructions to block Windows 11 Update using the Registry:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Right Click the Start Menu and select &#8220;Run&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Type regedit and press Enter<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">On the Registry editor window, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate<br \/>\n(You can copy and paste the address on the address bar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">On the right side of the screen, right click &gt; New &gt; DWORD (32-bit) &gt; and name it TargetReleaseVersion<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Double click it and set Value Data to 1<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, on the right side of the screen, right click &gt; New &gt; String Value &gt; and name it ProductVersion,<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Double click it and set Value Data to Windows 10<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Once more on the right side of the screen, right click &gt; New &gt; String Value &gt; and name it TargetReleaseVersionInfo, double click it and set Value Data to 21h2<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note: If you can&#8217;t find the Windows Update key, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows, right click &gt; New &gt; Key , and name it WindowsUpdate<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\"><b>Powershell Command #1<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate \/v TargetReleaseversion \/t REG_DWORD \/d 1<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\"><b>PowerShell Command #2<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you are on Windows 10 version 21H2, use the command below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate \/v TargetReleaseversionInfo \/t REG_SZ \/d 21H2<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you are on Windows 10 version 21H1, use the command below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate \/v TargetReleaseversionInfo \/t REG_SZ \/d 21H1<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Note: A TargetedReleaseVersion is a group policy introduced with Windows 10 version 1803. If you specify a TargetReleaseVersion as the current Version, Windows 10 will remain on this release until it reaches the end of service. This will block the Windows 11 update. The first command enables the policy, and the second specifies the target version.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">More information can be found here:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/all\/how-to-stop-or-block-windows-11-update\/9f271456-51dd-4716-b69d-0834d552ca83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/all\/how-to-stop-or-block-windows-11-update<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">So that\u2019s it\u2014a year on from my first blog you have a way to block Windows 11 using N&#8209;central Automatic Decline and a way to block it in the Registry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s7\"><i>Jason Murphy is the N&#8209;central Automation Nerd at N&#8209;able.
