According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisuper.com.au\/about-us\/media-centre\/2024\/a-joint-statement-from-unisuper-and-google-cloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">joint statement from Google Cloud and UniSuper<\/span><\/a>, the deletion occurred due to an \u201cinadvertent misconfiguration.\u201d As a result, more than 600,000 pension fund users were unable to access their accounts for over a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">UniSuper had geographical redundancy built into its Google Cloud environment, according to the statement. However, the misconfiguration caused fund data in both locations to be deleted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The fund was able restore data and services via an unnamed third-party backup provider. However, it wasn\u2019t easy. Restoring UniSuper\u2019s Google Cloud instance required \u201can incredible amount of focus, effort, and partnership between our teams to enable an extensive recovery of all the core systems,\u201d according to the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Key takeaways:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) does not eliminate the need for backup.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Geo-redundancy does not eliminate the need for backup.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s a reason public cloud providers like Google and Amazon recommend third-party data protection in their user agreements. Don\u2019t put all your eggs in one basket.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">As IaaS adoption continues to increase, many organizations will require IaaS-specific backup and disaster recovery planning expertise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">So, what happened?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the statement, \u201cthe disruption arose from an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper\u2019s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper\u2019s Private Cloud subscription.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">As noted above, UniSuper had data redundancy in two geographies, but because the fund\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s5\">subscription<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> was terminated, data was deleted across both. The joint statement indicated that this was an isolated occurrence and Google Cloud has taken measures to ensure it can\u2019t happen again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">3-2-1 backup in IaaS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The 3-2-1 data backup strategy is a well-known and reliable method to protect against data loss. The principle is straightforward: maintain three copies of your data, store two copies on different types of media, and keep one in a geographically disparate location for disaster recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The concept has been around since the days of tape backups. Back then, it meant production data, onsite disk or tape backup, and offsite tape for disaster recovery. In an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) environment, the 3-2-1 backup strategy maintains these core principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">However, the strategy can be implemented in different ways, and the approach taken can have a significant impact on your ability to meet recovery time objectives (RTO). This is evident in the UniSuper situation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the statement, UniSuper had <b>three copies<\/b> of data:<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The live data within UniSuper\u2019s Google Cloud environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The secondary redundant copy also in Google Cloud.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The third-party backup that they recovered from.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It also had <b>two different \u201cmedia\u201d <\/b>(in this case providers: Google Cloud and the third-party backup) and <b>one that is \u201coffsite\u201d <\/b>(the third-party backup as it was outside of Google Cloud).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For many organizations, this might be an adequate solution; especially if the backup provider offers business continuity capabilities that enable fast recovery of mission-critical apps and services. So, what went wrong?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Well, restoring a large data set to a complex operating environment (virtual servers, cloud storage, databases, etc) can be very time consuming. So, organizations with extremely limited tolerance for application downtime (like say, a super fund with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisuper.com.au\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">$125bn under management<\/span><\/a>) most likely require a solution that provides both redundancy and availability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Some organizations accomplish this by replicating workloads to a second IaaS provider. In other words, if the primary data and applications are in Google Cloud, the secondary (failover) copy would reside in AWS or Microsoft Azure. Third-party backup would remain to provide fast file and folder restores, ransomware resilience, compliance, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The devil is in the details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">DR Expertise Needed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Remember, this is a fund with hundreds of billions of dollars under management. If UniSuper could benefit from additional DR expertise, the average SMB could too. That\u2019s why disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS), is a profitable offering for so many managed services providers (MSPs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">We believe that DRaaS represents a huge opportunity for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/products\/cove-data-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cove<\/a> partners.
