In spite of all the movies out there and their incredible complexity, they are not human. They are not subject to mood, personality, or what they had for breakfast that morning. They act in the manner they are programmed to act, every time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">What is this babble, you may ask? But, they often don\u2019t work, and break! They stop functioning and make my life miserable! How can you say they act in the manner they are programmed to act, every time! That is absurd!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Is it?<\/p>\n<h3>There\u2019s always a solution<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/TroubleShooting1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1178 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/TroubleShooting1-350x173.jpg\" alt=\"TroubleShooting1\" width=\"350\" height=\"173\" data-entity-type=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"\" \/><\/a>Computer software has\u00a0<em>no free will<\/em>. It is written to expect a very specific environment and to rely on that environment to be set up, exactly as it was intended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">For example, if a service stops running, because the account used to run that service had an expired password, then even though your program has ceased to function at this level, it is still acting in the manner it was programed to. The program expected to be run\u00a0<em>with a password that is current.<\/em>\u00a0When that perimeter is changed, it cannot adjust to that and it stops working. This behavior will happen, every time, without exception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Windows will never give a smile and a wink and say,<em>\u00a0\u201cOk, your password expired, but this one time\u2026 go ahead buddy\u2026I\u2019ll overlook it\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">It is essential you start with this fundamental truth. Because if you do not believe the answer is there, you will not look for it. Remember for every issue there\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0a solution.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Your quick guide to IT troubleshooting<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I define IT troubleshooting as,<em>\u00a0\u201cdiscovering the cause of the problem and implementing the solution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/sherlockholmes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1176 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/sherlockholmes-350x173.jpg\" alt=\"sherlockholmes\" width=\"350\" height=\"173\" data-entity-type=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"\" \/><\/a>What is not IT troubleshooting is the \u201cshot gun approach\u201d that includes solutions such as a reinstallation of the software or the entire OS to solve an issue. While that may, at times, solve the problem it is not\u00a0<em>by definition IT<\/em>\u00a0troubleshooting. As soon as the environmental variable that caused the initial problem is re-introduced the problem will come back. Sound familiar? In that case the Admin has skipped the first part of IT troubleshooting \u201cdiscovering the cause of the problem\u201d and jumped right to a solution of sorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><em>Learn it know it, live it. When something doesn\u2019t work, there is always a reason why. This is true: every single time without exception.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">And your mission is to find that reason. The more you do this, the better you get at it. So let\u2019s look at the first part of the definition: discovering the cause of the problem.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Collect the data<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/Data.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1177 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n-able.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cnblog\/2015\/04\/Data-350x173.jpg\" alt=\"Data\" width=\"350\" height=\"173\" data-entity-type=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"\" \/><\/a>As Sherlock Holmes said: \u201cData! Data! Data!&#8221; he cried impatiently. &#8220;I can&#8217;t make bricks without clay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Collect data, lots of data, then when it comes time to implementing the solution you have narrowed this down to only a few choices.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking down the problem\u2026\u00a0All IT problems fall into one of two categories:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li4\">This is a new implementation that has not worked before.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">This is a running solution that has stopped working (break fix).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Collecting data for a new implementation.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li4\">\u201cWhat have you done so far?\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Since you do not know the skill level of your end user, you cannot assume they know anything about the problem. Essential requirements may not even be in place.<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">\u201cIs this an upgrade to a previous version?\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Makes a big difference. What an end user calls a new install could be an upgrade or even a move from one server to another.<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">What exactly is the issue you are experiencing?<br \/>\n<em>Narrow it down, specifically. You define the issue.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\">Collecting data for break-fix issues.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li4\">When did it last work correctly?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">When did you first notice the problem?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">What happened in between the time it was working and now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Questions to be asked for any issue<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li4\">Are there any error messages? Ask for a screen shot of the error message. End users don\u2019t always want to read this to you.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">How often does this occur?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">Under what conditions does this occur?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">Can you easily reproduce the issue?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">What is the impact to the business?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\">Is there anything relevant in the system or application event logs? (you determine this, not the caller)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Record problems and solutions<\/h3>\n<p>A Rutter is a mariner&#8217;s handbook of written sailing directions. Before the advent of nautical charts, rutters were the primary store of geographic information for maritime navigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\">What does that have to do with IT troubleshooting? Logging problems and solutions can act as your\u00a0<b>technical Rutter.<\/b>\u00a0If you document your IT troubleshooting well, you can refer back to them when the same issue occurs again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\">Documenting what has been done is a habit of any good System\u2019s Admin. Developing a clear and precise documentation method is vital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\">Also, recording your methodology is a great way to recall and improve upon it for next time.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>You have chosen a career in IT as a professional troubleshooter. Make it your goal then to be the very best you can be. Every problem that comes your way can be an opportunity to develop this skill set.
