MacOS Ventura: our new favorite features and improvements

Upgrading to a new operating system can be difficult, not to mention it is rarely fun. That being said, here are my top five new macOS Ventura features that make it a worthwhile upgrade in my book.

How to install macOS Ventura

Before looking at the features, it’s worth quickly go over the installation process as a quick refresher. Your organization may do this differently, but this is how I went about updating my MacBook Pro.

Step 1: Always back up your system first. This can be done using Time Machine or any third-party Mac-supported backup tool. Whether you think the upgrade is going to go smoothly or not, backing up your files is the place to start.

Step 2: Go to the Apple Menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.  Go to System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now or Upgrade Now.

Step 3: Apple does the rest!

Now that’s out the way, here are my favorite new features (in no particular order):

Passkeys

This new feature that Apple teamed up with FIDO Alliance to create, is a secure passwordless sign-in system. The Passkeys are stored only on your device and are used only for the site that they are created for. This makes them extremely difficult to be phished. It should also be noted that the Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted, and can sync across Apple devices through iCloud Keychain.

Lockdown Mode

When you turn on Lockdown Mode, features, apps, and websites will be restricted for security in an effort to reduce your Apple device’s attack surface and keep spyware or malware from compromising your data.

Rapid Security Response

This new improvement allows you to get important security updates to your devices faster. Please note that this isn’t a traditional software update; these updates/improvements are designed to be applied automatically between normal updates.

Live Captions

If you have ever worked with any transcription software for accessibility, you know they can be a pain to deal with. Live Captions is Apple bringing its own service to the table, and even though it is in beta, it is pretty slick. Transcripts are generated in real-time and can even work with FaceTime.  So, if you manage any devices for the deaf, the hard of hearing, or those like me who record everything, this feature is worth looking out for. Please note, this feature requires an M-series chip.

Stage Manager

This feature allows for easier access to all your windows and open apps on the left side of your screen.  It also allows for the grouping of apps for projects, rearranging sizes and positions of windows within your workspace, and quick and easy switching between apps. This one did take some getting used to but, once I got the hang of using Stage Manager, especially with multiple monitors, I have grown to love it.

Did you know that N‑able N‑sight now offers feature parity with Windows management for those managing Apple devices?

Mac Office Hours are starting back up in Q1 2023 and I would love to hear what new features have made your life easy in the Office Hours sessions so that other MSPs can learn from all our experiences!
