Take Control in 2021: a year of top features

2021 was another challenging year globally. Despite this, the N‑able Take Control team continued to deliver top-notch releases to increase product functionalities and improve customer satisfaction. In this blog, we’ll take a brief look at the key client-facing features we’ve delivered in the past 12 months.

Remote audio

Let there be sound. Remote audio allows users to capture and replay all audio on the remote machine to the in-session technician. This much-requested feature adds significant value to support sessions, allowing techs (across platforms) to be aware of all system audio alerts, in addition to identifying other running sources of audio.

New outside-of-session chat | push announcements | enhanced notifications

Take Control now allows you to communicate in more ways than ever. With the outside-of-session chat, technicians can initiate a text chat with active users who have the Take Control agent installed on their device without having an active remote-control session in place.

There are also new push announcements for devices with the Take Control agent installed. This enables custom messages to be displayed on the screen of selected remote devicesfor example, to inform users about maintenance periods or send urgent notifications to multiple devices with one click.

Another subtle yet significant improvement to the UX is the addition of enhanced in-session notifications. These make it possible to add a red border around the screen during a remote session with logged-in users, as well as to configure the option to close the notification pop-up while a session is active.

Business-critical devices

Let’s be honest, some machines are more important than others.

To assist with monitoring access to sensitive machines, Take Control triggers a notification email to a specified address whenever a business-critical device provides or receives remote support. This email includes details of when the following actions occur:

  • Device added to the business-critical list
  • Device removed from the business-critical list
  • Session involving a business-critical device started
  • Script submitted for a business-critical device
  • Policy set for a business-critical device

From now on, no access to critical business devices will go unnoticed.

Unhealthy connection alert

We’re not over just yet.

Users will be sent a proactive notification if the Take Control agent is connected to the server but is lacking a gateway—allowing you to troubleshoot faster and in a more seamless fashion. Unhealthy connection alert lets users know when there’s an incorrect firewall configuration and the device has limited connectivity to the Take Control cloud, which might make it unreachable. This notification can be seen from within both the Tech Console and Admin Area.

Disabling automatic updates (Windows only)

Last but not least, users can now choose to block automatic agent updates. This is as easy as selecting the right checkbox inside Settings. Besides configuring this in the local Settings window of the agent, it can also be applied remotely from the Admin Area.

This is essential for those who need to meet a specific audit or compliance/security requirement. However, it must be noted that these are the only cases when disabling the updates is safe because doing otherwise may pose a security risk.

Hopefully you enjoyed these fresh additions to our remote support tool—after all, each one was implemented with our partners in mind. That is one of the reasons N‑able Take Control received the Top Performer Winter 2021 Badge from the widely respected G2 Community. As we’re always open for feedback, please feel free to visit our G2 page and leave a review.

Despite all the challenges and obstacles, 2022 looks bright as the N‑able Take Control team embarks yet again on a journey to deliver the best product experience to all customers.
