World Backup Day—3 Crucial Backup Lessons Learned

It’s World Backup Day! And that means that once again, backup vendors, influencers, and pundits are talking about the importance of backing up your data. Of course, that’s important, as is testing your backups on a regular basis, and making sure you’re adhering to regulatory and security standards in the process.
But in the 12 years since World Backup Day began, surely we’ve learned some lessons about how to do backup better? Indeed we have, and here are three valuable lessons learned to keep in mind as you celebrate all things backup.
Lesson 1: SaaS Applications DO Need to Be Backed Up
Eric Lucas, Information Services Manager at Texican Natural Gas, got the call when an end user lost an Excel spreadsheet in Microsoft 365, seemingly into thin air. “She said it was there when she left work and was gone when she got home, and she wanted to work on the file that night,” Eric explained. “We spent the whole next day working with our third-party Microsoft vendor looking in all the nooks and crannies, only to ultimately not be able to find that file again.”
When Eric broke the bad news to her that the file could not be found, and would need to be recreated, she was in tears. “Now that we’re using Cove Data Protection for Microsoft 365, I could have asked her what day she wanted the file restored from, which of the four backups on that day she wanted, and where she wanted the file to be restored to? We’re now ready to save the day, and avoid the disappointment.”
Lesson 2: Backup Tools Can Have Additional Uses
Matthew Hatfield, owner of FireFly Network Solutions, is working to move all his clients to the cloud, reducing the number of on-premises servers across the board. One client had a server running an older version of Microsoft Windows, and Matthew needed a way to get that local server data into Microsoft 365. From there he was able to transfer the data into a OneDrive folder in the new Microsoft 365 environment.
